EdAdvance Featured Speaker at the Western CT Leadership’s Education Day
October 5th, 2017
EdAdvance’s Assistant Executive Director, Jonathan Costa, was a featured speaker at Western Connecticut Leadership’s (WCL) Education Day Session on Monday, October 2, 2017. WCL is a leadership series sponsored by Connecticut Community Foundation. The program provides in-depth information to advance understanding of current issues and community needs in Connecticut for leaders across diverse fields.
In his presentation, Jonathan provided historical highlights and the contexts for the current state of public education. He addressed the foundational tenets of public education, its evolution over time, and the most compelling present day and future challenges. “Over the past 30 years, the primary mission has evolved from providing universal access for all students to ensuring both access and proficiency for all students. This, and the impacts of digital learning and declining enrollments, are proving to be the biggest challenges for Connecticut educators in the 21st century,” Jonathan commented.
The WCL Education Day Session provided participants with an enhanced understanding of how critical their involvement, and the involvement of other key stakeholders, is for the continued advancement of education in the state. Throughout the day, participants engaged in active discussions around such topics as: measuring the impact of education, promising innovations in education, and career-focused educational opportunities.
