EdAdvance, the Regional Educational Service Center (RESC) in western CT, and the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) recently convened two Regional Leadership Forums in western Connecticut. The first forum was held at EdAdvance’s campus in Litchfield on December 7th and the second forum was held at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on December 9th. A broad spectrum of education and community stakeholders, including school superintendents, board of education and town/city leadership, regional councils of government, and elected local and state officials participated in these two inaugural events. The purpose of the forums was to engage in a community conversation about strategies for improving education in our region in an era of fiscal crisis.
Dr. Jeffrey Kitching, Executive Director at EdAdvance noted that “the upcoming Connecticut legislative session has the potential to be one of the most impactful in years. There is little doubt that the state budget will dominate political conversations throughout the session. However, beyond the budget, there are other issues such as regional cooperation/efficiency efforts, unfunded mandates placed on municipalities and school districts, and current bureaucratic structures, to name a few, that often negatively impact cities, towns and schools. This event was a first step in meaningful dialogue among education and community leaders around key policy issues of regional importance with high potential to positively impact our schools and communities.”
The key issues and focus areas generated at the forums will be used to develop action plans collaboratively with school and community leaders to champion solutions to the issues identified within western Connecticut. Importantly, RESCs throughout the state are also working on a unified approach with leaders in their respective service areas, which will impact planning statewide.
