Civil Rights Stories is an innovation academic enrichment program for 7th and 8th grade students from Danbury, Region 7, and Thomaston in which they are given the opportunity to collaborate with diverse peers in a highly interactive and engaging learning environment. Using the “doing history” methodology, students will study civil rights, equality, and social injustice in American history by exploring and investigating history through literature, writing, and the arts. Students will use oral histories as a tool for learning about people, places and events. Civil Rights Stories offers a unique learning platform where students will learn key academic concepts through lessons, activities, and presentations. Program content will naturally help students gain a deeper sense of the perspectives of others as they learn to formulate opinions based on historical accuracies. Students will complete a capstone project for CT History Day and present their project to judges in the spring.
