Children and/or young adults suffer violence by adults, partners, and other students in their lives. They bring special issues to school officials and require special care, protection, and compassion. Students experience many of the same traumas adults experience, but the loss of trust for an adult or someone close to them and the pain of the loss of innocence or wounds can be especially difficult to understand and manage. Schools need to be especially sensitive to the signs of violence and abuse and need to be on the first line of protecting the students they serve. Developed by Michael Livovich, in this tutorial you will learn the three types of domestic and sexual violence; characteristics of abusers and the abused; warning signs of abuse; local procedures on the part of the school system and the staff member; and state remedies afforded to individuals who are abused.
